Portable Fire Pits Can Enhance Your Patio

Fire Pit Safety Tips
- Annual Inspection. If you have a gas unit, it is important to get it professionally inspected each year. And always remember that you must have a certified gas supplier install any piping that may be connected to your home.
- Protective Covers. You should invest in a protective cover to shield your fire pit from the elements. You can also use it if you plan on not using your pit for an extended period of time.
- Clean Burners. With gas pits, make sure you regularly check and clean the burners to rid them of any insect nests and dirt buildup.
- Cool Off. Do not clean or touch any elements that get hot when the flame is on until you know that the parts have completely cooled down.
- Fire Extinguisher. With any accessory that creates an open fire, always have a fire extinguisher on hand. Ensure that the extinguisher is in working condition and that it is not close to expiration date.
- Start Small. With wood burning fire pits, start your fires small and only use the suggested fire starters. Do not use gasoline and do not pile your wood up high.
- Fire Screens. These accessories are also great investments. The screens help contain the fire and keep debris and sparks from flying out of the pit.
- Metal Ash Bucket. Instead of throwing your wood or coals into bag, use a metal ash bucket for higher protection.
- Stay Attentive. The NFPA advise is to never leave your unit unattended until after you know that the flames have been completely put out. Also, always supervise your children and inform them to never touch the fire or pit.
- Notify your Home Insurer. Take note that in some parts of the country you need to call your insurer because failure to disclose your fire pit could breach your home insurance policy.
